Alpha S005B Black Motion Sensor
The Alpha S005B Black Motion Sensor provides automatic protection for compatible motorised folding arm and cassette awnings by detecting the physical movement of the awning’s front bar.
Installed onto the front channel of the awning at either end, the sensor monitors both the angle of the front bar and movement caused by wind.
When movement reaches the selected sensitivity threshold, the S005B sends a signal to the compatible motor to retract the awning automatically.
This provides a different approach to conventional sun and wind sensors because the S005B responds to movement occurring at the awning itself rather than measuring wind conditions from a sensor positioned nearby.
Detects Actual Awning Movement
The S005B continuously monitors movement of the awning’s front bar.
Wind conditions around buildings can vary considerably depending on direction, surrounding structures and the position of the awning.
Rather than relying solely on a wind-speed measurement, the motion sensor detects how much the awning itself is moving.
When movement reaches the selected sensitivity setting, the sensor triggers the retraction signal.
9 Sensitivity Settings
The Alpha S005B provides 9 predetermined sensitivity settings.
This allows the motion threshold to be adjusted to suit the awning and installation rather than relying on one fixed movement level.
The appropriate sensitivity can be selected during setup according to the requirements of the installation.
Folding Arm and Cassette Awning Protection
When paired with a compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motor, the S005B provides an additional monitoring feature.
The motion sensor periodically sends a pulse to the motor to indicate that the sensor is present and operating.
If the motor stops receiving this pulse — for example because the sensor batteries become flat or the sensor stops functioning — the compatible motor will automatically retract the awning after approximately half an hour.
This provides two benefits: it helps protect the awning and alerts the owner that the motion sensor may require attention.
Once communication is restored, such as after replacing depleted batteries, normal operation resumes.
Universal Motor Compatibility
Alpha states that the S005B can also control a Universal motor.
However, there is an important difference.
When used with a Universal motor, the additional protective monitoring described above — where loss of the sensor’s regular pulse causes automatic retraction — is not available.
The motion-triggered control can still operate, but customers should not assume that a Universal motor provides the same sensor-failure protection as Alpha’s compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motor system.
Designed for Folding Arm Awnings
The S005B attaches directly to the front channel of a folding arm awning at either end.
This location allows the sensor to detect movement of the front bar itself.
Because the device moves with the awning rather than remaining fixed to a nearby wall or structure, it can respond directly to physical movement affecting the awning.
Alternative to Sun/Wind Sensors
Alpha describes the motion sensor as a more reliable method of awning protection than its Sun/Wind sensors because it reacts to actual movement of the awning front bar rather than wind speed detected at another location.
However, these two sensor systems cannot be combined.
The S005B Motion Sensor cannot be used in conjunction with Alpha Sun/Wind Sensors.
The appropriate sensor system therefore needs to be selected for the installation.
433.92 MHz Rolling-Code Communication
The Alpha S005B communicates at 433.92 MHz and uses rolling-code technology.
This allows the sensor to wirelessly communicate with the compatible motor system when the selected movement threshold is reached.
IP44 Protection
The S005B has an IP44 protection rating, providing protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water from different directions.
Installation should still follow Alpha’s instructions and mounting requirements.
Powered by Two AAA Batteries
The S005B is powered by 2 × AAA batteries.
Battery power allows the sensor to remain attached to the moving front bar without requiring a wired power connection.
With compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motors, loss of the sensor’s regular communication pulse can trigger the additional automatic retraction function described above.

Important Compatibility Information
The Alpha S005B Motion Sensor cannot be used in conjunction with Sun/Wind Sensors.
When paired with compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motors, additional protection is provided if the motor stops receiving the sensor’s regular operating pulse.
A Universal motor does not provide this additional sensor-failure protection.
FAQs
What does the Alpha S005B Motion Sensor do?
The S005B monitors physical movement of a folding arm awning’s front bar. When movement reaches the selected sensitivity level, it sends a signal to retract the awning.
Where is the S005B installed?
It attaches to the front channel of a folding arm awning at either end, allowing it to monitor movement of the front bar.
How many sensitivity settings are available?
The S005B provides 9 predetermined sensitivity settings.
What happens if the sensor batteries go flat?
When used with a compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motor, loss of the sensor’s regular operating pulse causes the motor to retract the awning after approximately half an hour. Normal operation resumes when communication is restored.
Can the S005B work with a Universal motor?
Yes, but the Universal motor does not provide the additional automatic retraction protection if the sensor stops transmitting its regular pulse.
Can I use the S005B with a Sun/Wind Sensor?
No. Alpha specifically states that the Motion Sensor cannot be used in conjunction with Sun/Wind Sensors.
What batteries does the S005B use?
The sensor is powered by 2 × AAA batteries.
