Alpha S005W White Motion Sensor
The Alpha S005W White Motion Sensor provides automatic protection for compatible motorised folding arm and cassette awnings by monitoring the physical movement and angle of the awning’s front bar.
Mounted directly to the front channel of the awning at either end, the S005W detects movement created by wind. When that movement reaches the selected sensitivity level, the sensor sends a signal to the compatible motor to retract the awning.
Unlike a conventional wind sensor mounted elsewhere on a building, the S005W responds to movement occurring at the awning itself.
Detects Movement at the Front Bar
The S005W measures both the angle of the front bar and the amount of movement caused by wind.
This direct measurement means the sensor responds according to what is physically happening to the awning rather than relying on wind-speed measurements taken at another location.
Wind conditions around a building can vary depending on direction, surrounding structures and where a separate weather sensor is installed.
By mounting directly to the awning, the S005W monitors the movement that actually affects the front bar.
9 Adjustable Sensitivity Settings
The Alpha S005W provides 9 predetermined sensitivity settings.
This allows the amount of movement required to trigger the retraction signal to be adjusted according to the particular installation.
Rather than relying on one fixed sensitivity level, the sensor can be configured to suit the awning and operating environment.
Once movement reaches the selected setting, the sensor sends the command for the compatible awning motor to retract.
Additional Protection with Compatible Awning Motors
When the S005W is paired with a compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motor, an additional monitoring feature operates in the background.
The motion sensor sends a pulse to the motor several times each hour, effectively confirming that the sensor is present and operating.
If the motor stops receiving this pulse — for example because the sensor batteries have gone flat or the sensor has failed — the compatible motor will automatically retract the awning after approximately half an hour.
This helps protect the awning while also providing an indication that the motion sensor requires attention.
Once communication is restored, typically after replacing depleted batteries, normal operation resumes.
Universal Motor Operation
Alpha states that the S005W can also control a Universal motor, but there is an important difference in functionality.
A Universal motor does not provide the additional protective function that automatically retracts the awning when the regular sensor pulse is no longer detected.
The sensor can still provide motion-triggered control, but the additional communication-loss protection available with compatible Folding Arm and Cassette Awning motors is not provided.
Alternative to Sun and Wind Sensors
Alpha identifies the motion-sensor approach as a more reliable method of protection than its Sun/Wind sensors because it responds directly to physical movement of the awning’s front bar rather than wind speed measured by a nearby device.
The two systems, however, cannot be operated together.
The Alpha S005W Motion Sensor cannot be used in conjunction with Sun/Wind Sensors.
Customers should therefore select the appropriate environmental protection system for their particular installation.
433.92 MHz Rolling-Code Communication
The Alpha S005W operates at 433.92 MHz and uses rolling-code technology.
This provides wireless communication between the motion sensor and compatible motor system without requiring a control cable running from the moving front bar back to the motor.
IP44 Protection
The S005W has an IP44 protection rating.
This provides protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water from different directions.
Installation and positioning should still follow Alpha’s instructions for the motion sensor and awning system.
Powered by AAA Batteries
The S005W operates using 2 × AAA batteries.
Battery operation allows the sensor to remain mounted directly to the moving front channel without requiring a separate wired power connection.
For compatible Folding Arm and Cassette Awning motors, the communication-monitoring function also helps identify situations where depleted batteries have caused the sensor to stop communicating.
White Housing
The S005W is the white version of Alpha’s motion sensor.
This provides an alternative to the black S005B model and allows the sensor colour to be selected to better suit the awning hardware and overall installation.
The fundamental motion-sensing functionality remains the same.

Important Compatibility Information
The Alpha S005W cannot be used in conjunction with Sun/Wind Sensors.
When used with compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motors, additional protection is available if the motor stops receiving the motion sensor’s regular operating pulse.
Universal motors do not provide this additional sensor-failure protection.
FAQs
What does the Alpha S005W Motion Sensor do?
The S005W monitors the angle and physical movement of a folding arm awning’s front bar. When movement reaches the selected sensitivity level, it signals the compatible motor to retract the awning.
Where is the S005W installed?
It attaches to the front channel of the folding arm awning at either end.
How many sensitivity settings does it have?
The S005W provides 9 predetermined sensitivity settings.
What happens if its batteries go flat?
With compatible Folding Arm or Cassette Awning motors, loss of the sensor’s regular communication pulse causes the motor to retract the awning after approximately half an hour.
Can it control a Universal motor?
Yes, but a Universal motor does not provide the additional automatic retraction function if communication with the motion sensor is lost.
Can I use the S005W with a Sun/Wind Sensor?
No. Alpha states that its Motion Sensor cannot be used in conjunction with Sun/Wind Sensors.
What is the difference between S005W and S005B?
The primary distinction is the housing colour: S005W is white, while S005B is black. Both provide the same stated motion-sensing specifications and 9 sensitivity settings.
